Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCO) is an Endocrine, Gynaecological and Reproductive disorder characterised by multiple cystic growths on the ovaries, and affects millions of people with ovaries worldwide. Polycystic Ovaries develops when the ovaries are stimulated to produce excessive amounts of male hormones (androgens), particularly testosterone, either through the release of excessive luteinising hormone (LH) by the pituitary gland or through high levels of insulin in the blood (hyperinsulinaemia) in people whose ovaries are sensitive to this stimulus.
It is said that 20% of people with ovaries have PCOS, but this is based on the people who are diagnosed. With so many people misdiagnosed, or not diagnosed, it is hard to say just how many people actually have PCOS.
